LogMeIn, the company behind the popular password manager LastPass, has announced a major change to the way the free tier of the service works. Starting March 16, 2021, users of the free tier will be limited to using the service on either just desktop or just mobile.

Users of LastPass Free password manager will soon have to choose between their mobile and desktop devices or upgrade to the Premium service. Starting March 16, 2021, LastPass Free will only. Starting March 16th, 2021, LastPass Free will only include access on unlimited devices of one type. To further clarify what we mean by active device type, we've included two examples below: Jamie is a Free user with Computers as their active device type.

  • LastPass announced today that it will make changes to its Free service on March 16, 2021. Starting on that day, LastPass Free users will only be able to use one device type going forward to access their passwords and use synchronization functionality.
  • Beginning March 16, LastPass Free users will no longer be able to sync their passwords, credit-card numbers, notes, addresses and bank-account information across all their devices.

Currently, the free tier of LastPass is, by and large, a fully functional password manager that allows using the service across mobile and desktop platforms. This means you can create and save passwords on your computer through the desktop client and they will automatically be synced to your phone or tablet through the mobile app.

Starting from March 16, when users of the free tier sign into either the mobile or the desktop app, that particular platform will become their default. Say you choose desktop; in that case, you can continue using the service on the desktop and sync your passwords across multiple computers but not to your phone or tablet.

If you are not happy with your choice of platform, you will get three chances to switch it to the other one. After your three attempts expire, you will be locked to the last chosen platform.

If you want to unlock multiplatform sync support again, your option after March 16 would be to subscribe to one of the company's premium tiers, which currently includes a $36/year individual plan (available for $27/year for a limited time) and $48/year family plan.

If you are willing to switch to better alternatives, try bitwarden (cloud syncing) or KeepassXC (offline)

Starting next month, LastPass will no longer allow a free account to be used on multiple types of devices (computers and mobile) at the same time.

LastPass is a password manager that allows you to synchronize and auto-fill your login credentials throughout multiple platforms, including Windows, iOS, Android, and almost all web browsers.

While LastPass offers premium subscriptions with additional features, they also provide a Free subscription with 'password management with access on all your devices for free.'

Lastpass

Today, LastPass began emailing customers of their Free service with news that starting on March 16th, 2021, users will no longer be allowed to use the service on both mobile and computer desktops simultaneously.

Instead, users will be forced to select either a 'Computer' or 'Mobile' device platform that they wish to use the free service on. According to this email, LastPass Free users will be able to use the service on their Android and iOS mobile devices simultaneously but not on computers or vice-versa.

'We're making changes to how LastPass Free users access LastPass across device types. LastPass offers access across two device types - Computers (including all browsers running on desktops and laptops) or Mobile Devices (including mobile phones, smart watches, and tablets).

'Starting March 16, 2021, LastPass Free will only include access on unlimited devices of one type,' announced LastPass in a support bulletin.

LastPass Free will automatically select the designated platform type based on the device you first log in on and after March 16th. If you login in with your phone, LastPass will automatically set your active device type to 'Mobile.'

While LastPass Free users will not be able to use their devices on a different category of devices, they can use it on unlimited devices in the same category.

To prevent users from getting stuck on an unwanted platform, LastPass provides users three opportunities to change their active device type. After the third change, users will be stuck on that platform unless they upgrade to a LastPass Premium or Families account.

In addition to these new limitations, Lastpass Free users will no longer receive support via email and will only have access to the support center and the LastPass forums.
